During the past few years I have tried to express some of my own ideas about ink painting – landscapes in particular. It is easy (and correct) to be overwhelmed by the amount and quality of literature on the subject! My own book takes the form of seven essays. Two of them discuss how to read landscape painting, how to appreciate its qualities, and how to recognize the political aspect of painting. Two other chapters present masters of ink painting; one chapter is devoted to ancient masters, and one to contemporary painters. Then another two chapters deal with the practice of painting; first the things you need (the four treasures +), and second the handling of brush, ink and colour to create images. A final chapter provide some examples of how artists in the West have been inspired by Chinese ink painting.
